Anthony Rizzo Doesn't Expect Extension By Opening Day

Apr 1, 2021 8:34 AM

Anthony Rizzo will become a free agent after the season if he doesn't reach a contract extension with the Chicago Cubs.

Rizzo confirmed Monday that no deal is imminent with the Cubs. He does not want to negotiate during the season and said the two sides won't have an extension in place before Opening Day.

"I can't tell you what the future holds," he said.

The Cubs exercised their $14.5 million club option for Rizzo over the offseason. It was part of the team-friendly seven-year, $41 million extension he signed in March 2013.

Carlos Correa: I'm Preparing To Become Free Agent

Mar 26, 2021 8:09 AM

Carlos Correa doesn't think he'll reach an agreement on a contract extension with the Houston Astros.

The shortstop, who rejected a reported offer of $120 million over six years, is preparing to be a free agent when the season ends.

"I'm preparing like I'm going to be a free agent this year," said Correa, who avoided arbitration by signing an $11.7 million deal this offseason.

Correa won't negotiate a new deal once the season begins.

"Once the season starts and I start playing, I'm playing my last season before I become a free agent," he said. "For me, it doesn’t make any sense to be dealing while I'm trying to focus and trying to perform and trying to help my team win ballgames. So, yeah, absolutely not."

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a four-year, $82 million contract extension with Salvador Perez, according to a source.

The catcher's extension begins with the 2022 season.

"It's hard to believe where I'm coming from, where I grew up, to see the situation I have right now, it makes me feel super happy," Perez said. "My mother is going to be happy. I know my grandma is going to be happy. I know they're excited for me to be here for four more years, maybe five."
